Diablo rojo

The Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas), also known as jumbo squid or diablo rojo (Spanish for Red Devil), is a large powerful predatory squid. Their tentacles bear suckers lined with sharp teeth with which they grasp prey and drag it towards in a large sharp beak. They are not picky and eat what they can catch even its fellow species (cannibalism). Humboldt squids lives normally in a depth of 700 to 2.500 feets but occasionally they come in the night for hunting in shallow waters. This is the moment for the mexican fisherman which fishing them with traditional fishing lines. There are numerous accounts of the squid attacking fishermen, that’s why the nickname diablo rojos (red devils). Click one of the photos to see more….
